Who We Are:
The Vietnam Veterans of America is a not for profit Veterans-Service organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. Chapter 193 received its chapter charter on September 9, 1986, in Batavia, N.Y and is currently headquartered in LeRoy, NY. This small town in the western portion of the state hosts this Chapter of over 100 members. The counties represented are Wyoming, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, and Orleans.
We actively advocate for all veterans issues including POW/MIA affairs and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). We are also involved in Community Education, encouraging our schools to teach true history, including the facts of the Vietnam War. To this end we have sponsored the Dana Fry Scholarship Fund for over 15 years.
Chapter 193 sponsored the AVTT (American Veterans Traveling Tribute) in 2002 and The Moving Wall in 1996.
Our annual "Duck Derby" started in 1990 and is part of the Oatka Festival, a 3 day event in the village of LeRoy filled with a parade, crafts, food and a rubber duckie race. Thanks to Fisher Price and the local fire department, several hundred people watch from the bridge, road, and banks of the Oatka Creek as 2000 rubber duckies race from one side of the creek to the other. We, as a a member of the LeRoy Business Council, assist with the Childrens Community Fishing Derby. This event invites families to gather on the banks of Oatka Creek on Sunday morning for a free activity. We work in conjunction with the Business Council, Sportsmen’s Clubs and Fraternal organizations.
We have erected a Vietnam Veterans Memorial and a Veterans Pavilion in Genesee County Park, in Bethany, N.Y. and the membership is invited to many area parades during the summer months. Chapter members also participate, in conjunction with other veterans organizations, to provide funeral details to honor local veterans.We are the distributors of the Virtual Wall ™ CD.
The Virtual Wall ™ was created by Chapter 193 member, Jim Schueckler.Please join us, visit or become a member. Our meetings are at the Chapter 193 office at 53 West Main St in LeRoy, NY on the third Saturday of every month at 1300 hrs. Membership is open to Vietnam Era Veterans. Associate Membership is open to any veteran who served at any other time, as well as to those who didn’t serve in the military but support those who did.
